It started in a hospital basement

If you've always wanted to learn how to meditate, properly, with a qualified mindfulness teacher and a structure rather than an app and good intentions, my group program is finally open!

In 1979, a scientist named Jon Kabat-Zinn set up a course in the basement of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. His students were chronic pain patients, the people conventional medicine had run out of answers for. Nobody expected much from a mindfulness course in a hospital basement.

Nearly fifty years later, that course, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), is the most researched mindfulness programme in the world. When you read a study about what mindfulness does, MBSR is usually the course behind it.

I'm teaching it live online over eight weeks, starting Tuesday 20 October, and enrolment is open now. The first 10 people get the early-bird rate. To hold your place, reply to this email with the word “MBSR”.

I did my MBSR Teacher training at the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where the course began, and I teach the full standard curriculum (however, my online course will not have the full-day silent retreat).

So what does it actually do?

Decades of research point in the same direction. People who complete MBSR consistently report feeling less stressed and better able to handle pressure. Studies have found improvements in focus and attention, sleep quality, mood, and self-compassion.

MBSR graduates describe becoming less reactive: more able to pause and choose a response instead of being dragged along by the moment.

Hospitals and universities from UMass to Brown still teach this course nearly fifty years on because those results keep showing up.

What will you get by the end of the course?

And by the end of the eight weeks, you'll have things no app gives you. A daily meditation practice that stands on its own. The full toolkit: sitting meditation, the body scan, mindful movement, and how to bring awareness into ordinary moments. A clearer view of your own stress patterns, where they start and what feeds them. And a set of skills that don't expire when the course ends. It has a beginning, a structure, and a finish line. You do the work, and then you have it.

The details

- Eight weekly sessions, starting 20 October 2026

- 2 hours per session, live online on Zoom

- 9am Tuesday, Sydney time (for the US, that's Monday evening: 6pm New York, 3pm Los Angeles)

The price

The course alone is USD 295, or USD 250 early bird for the first 10 people.

Or, and this is deliberately the better deal, join my membership, Tired & Wired, at the $49/month founding rate that I'm holding for the next few weeks. The MBSR course is included, your place is held, and there's a 7-day free trial.

The booking page isn't live yet, so here's how to register: reply to this email with the word MBSR, and I'll hold your early-bird price and send the booking link as soon as it's up. Or, better still, join Tired & Wired here: https://www.skool.com/chibs

Let me know if you have any questions!
