Can't switch off after watching the news?

Hey friends,

It’s time for my monthly confessional 😅

I've been doing something I'm a little embarrassed to admit.

I’ve been waking up in the morning and before I've even properly opened my eyes... I’ve been watching the news ('Breaking Points' on YouTube in case you’re wondering who my trusted sources are!).

And then I listen to some more on my morning walk. Again at lunch. Again in the evening. And then again, just before bed — just one more look, to make sure I haven't missed anything important.

Sound familiar?

I had to have a word with myself. I started feeling a little anxious about the world, which I never do. Usually I can watch world events with a bit of detachment.

At some point, my news consumption stopped being about staying informed. It became about feeling prepared. And if I'm being really honest — if I saw someone else doing exactly what I was doing, I'd call it what it is: trying to feel safe.

But… I know that's an illusion.

Keeping watch all night (refreshing the feed, checking the thread, listening to one more take) doesn't change what's happening out there. It just means our nervous systems never get to stand down. And one that never stands down starts to see danger everywhere, loses sleep, and struggles to meet the world with any steadiness.

Which is the opposite of what any of us want right now.

So I've imposed a small news detox on myself. That’s not me being ignorant. That’s not me burying my head in the sand. It’s just an intentional limit on when and how much I let in.

Because here's what I keep coming back to: if something truly major happens, we will find out. Someone will message us. It'll be everywhere. We don't need to keep watch to stay informed. What we need is rest — so that when the world does need something from us, we’ve actually got something to give.

With that in mind, I'm working on something new — a guided sleep meditation specifically for the nights when the news is still with you. Fear, uncertainty, that feeling of the world being hard to trust. Not to fix any of it. Just to help your nervous system find somewhere safe to rest.

I haven't recorded it yet, but I'd love to know: is that something you'd actually use?

Hit reply and let me know. It helps me know where to focus.

Much love,

Chibs 💙

In the meantime, if your brain is one of those ones that just won't quiet down at night, I recorded something that might help.

It’s gone kinda viral, and a lot of you have told me this one hits different. Give it a go tonight if you need it.

“Zero Thoughts Tonight” is a deep sleep hypnosis for overthinkers. With this meditation there is no need to stop your thoughts or figure anything out. It's just a gentle space for your system to begin settling. Delta waves, slow hypnotic language, soft affirmations toward the end.
